Discovered in the early 2000s, Welo opal, often referred to as Ethiopian opal, has surpassed all Australian opals in popularity.
 
Its name and its translucent to transparent colour, which manifests itself in a variety of patterns, come from an exceptional discovery made in Ethiopia's Wello province.
